Above average rainfall in May has put Coliban Water’s catchment storages on the Coliban River near Kyneton in a good position for winter inflows.
Manager Regional Liveability Steve Healy said the recent rainfall has wet up the catchment area around the water storages after a dry summer and dry start to autumn.
“Our autumn rainfall was 149 millimetres, which is only eight millimetres less than the long term average, but 87 per cent of that rainfall was in May.
“Our inflows are 61 per cent less than the long-term average but the wetter conditions mean our catchments are well placed to receive inflows over winter and spring.
“The winter-spring period is when we traditionally receive 85-90 per cent of our annual inflow into our storages before we go into our peak summer demand period.
“Our catchment storages were last full in October 2017 and we have been carefully monitoring and managing our resources,” said Mr Healy.
Coliban Water has nine separate water supply systems across its region, each with different supply source and level of water security – all reliant on rainfall over winter and spring.
“Permanent Water Saving Rules are in place across our region and everything we do to conserve water – even in the cooler months – helps overall water security.

Coliban Water has forecast the 2019/20 rural season to open at 100 per cent allocation and will announce the opening allocation on 1 July 2019.
