Integrated Water Management (IWM)
Integrated Water Management (IWM) is a holistic and collaborative approach to planning and managing all elements of the water cycle, including drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and waterways can contribute to water security, environment health and urban amenity. It represents a shift in how water, land use planning, and urban development are understood and delivered in Victoria.
In the context of climate change and increasing urbanisation, the Coliban Water region is changing, and it is vital that water managers and planners work together to consider all available water sources to meet community needs and support resilient cities, towns and waterways.
The Coliban Water region IWM Forum supports urban liveability and resilience across our region. Forum members bring their diverse perspectives, representing Traditional Owners, local governments, catchment management authorities, water corporations and government agencies, to leverage opportunities across the water cycle to deliver a healthy, resilient and prosperous future for our region.

Purpose: Working together to create water cycle outcomes that support the future health and resilience of our environment and communities.
The 2018 Strategic Directions Statement (SDS) articulated the collaborative intent and shared agreement of all stakeholders involved in the Coliban IWM Forum. The 2022 SDS provides a progress report on the forum’s activity, its changing priorities, and future opportunities. It describes the water security challenges and opportunities of the region, sets the strategic direction for the next few years, and identifies 15 priority opportunities for the region, under three key themes:
- Water for people, environment, and healing country
- Making more of water resources in a changing climate
- Integrated planning for a sustainable future
