Connection to Country and Water

The Yorta Yorta people are a proud Aboriginal Nation whose ancestral lands span the Dhungala (Murray River) region across northern Victoria and southern New South Wales. They are the Traditional Custodians of areas including the Barmah-Millewa Forest, Goulburn and Campaspe Rivers, and Echuca-Moama.

The Yorta Yorta maintain a deep, enduring connection to their Country (Woka), viewing land, water (Wala), sky, animals, plants, and ancestral spirits as a living whole. Water, especially the Dhungala and surrounding wetlands, is central to their culture, identity, and way of life.

For thousands of years, they have cared for their lands and waterways using Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). Today, the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation (YYNAC) leads efforts in land and water management, cultural preservation, and advocacy, ensuring their heritage continues for future generations.
