We are on Taungurung Country
Connection to Country and Water
The Taungurung people are the Traditional Custodians of a large region in central Victoria and are one of the five clans of the Kulin Nation. Their Country spans approximately 11,500 square kilometres, covering the Great Dividing Range and the Goulburn, Campaspe, and Broken River catchments. It includes diverse environments such as mountains, rivers, grasslands, and forests, which have sustained Taungurung people for thousands of years.
Their Country (Biik) lies mainly within the upper Goulburn River basin, encompassing areas such as Seymour, Broadford, Kilmore, Mansfield, Euroa, Heathcote, Marysville, and Alexandra.
Waterways and Water (Ngarrak) are central to Taungurung life, providing food, transport, and sacred sites. Rivers such as the Goulburn and Campaspe hold deep spiritual and practical significance and have been carefully managed through Traditional Ecological Knowledge. Taungurung people continue to practice cultural burning, hunting, fishing, and sustainable land management to maintain their strong connection to Biik.
Taungurung Land and Waters Council (TLaWC)
The Taungurung Land and Waters Council (TLaWC) is the corporate and legal representative of the Taungurung people. It works to:
• Protect cultural heritage
• Care for Country
• Negotiate agreements and advocate for rights
• Support community development, education, and employment
In 2018, the Taungurung signed a Recognition and Settlement Agreement with the Victorian Government, securing legal rights to manage and protect parts of their Country. TLaWC continues to uphold Taungurung traditions and restore their lands and waterways.
