Pine Safety Removal Project

> The project

We own 27 hectares (66.7 acres) of pine plantations in nine stands at or near the Malmsbury, Lauriston and Upper Coliban reservoirs near Kyneton.

These plantations were established about 70 years ago when the reservoirs were constructed and have become a recognised part of the landscape.

While the trees provide amenity and recreation value, their age and density makes them prone to wind damage.

To date we have fenced off areas of significant risk. The risk has increased in recent years as the pines have aged and have also been impacted by severe drought and storms.

Once the pines have been removed we intend to revegetate the areas using plants local to the area.

> Timeline

The current plan is for pine trees to be removed in stages over a two-year period, starting with the plantations at Malmsbury and Lauriston reservoirs. Then further harvesting at Lauriston Reservoir and Upper Coliban Reservoir.

We had previously publicised our timeline as commencing in May 2011. The council planning permit approval received a VCAT objection.

VCAT heard the objection on 30 August 2011 and approved the pine removal plan.

Our new timeline is to commence removal in late Autumn 2012.

> Current restricted access

On Friday 28 October 2011, the recreation areas at both Lauriston and Malmsbury Reservoirs were partially closed. (Stands 1 and 3 on the maps).

Access to the reservoirs has been restricted and changed parking and traffic conditions now apply. Visitors are asked to observe signage in place.

These areas will remain fenced off until the pine removal is completed next year.

Due to the high number of falling trees the following areas are not safe and are currently closed to the public:

Lauriston Stand 3 (1.7ha)
Area closed
Lauriston Stand 4 (14.2ha)
Access from the Lauriston Springhill Road is closed

Lauriston Stand 5 (1.4ha)
Access from the Lauriston Springhill Road is closed

Lauriston Stand 6 (3.5ha)
Access from the Lauriston Springhill Road is closed
