The Harcourt Rural System Modernisation project involves the construction of approximately 49.6km of pressurised pipeline reticulation network throughout the Harcourt area to replace the existing concrete and earthen gravity channel system.

A 500mm diameter truck main 'Backbone Pipeline' will transfer water between Faraday and Barkers Creek Reservoir and will also supply the Harcourt reticulation network.

The backbone for the modernisation project will eventually form part of a pipeline connecting Castlemaine's and Bendigo's water supply.

> Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999 referral process

The EPBC Act provides for the protection of the environment, especially matters of national environmental significance.

The purpose of the referral process is to obtain a decision from the Australian Government Environment Minister or the Minister’s delegate on whether the proposed action will need formal assessment and approval under the EPBC Act.

Attachment F (Castlemaine Link and Harcourt Modernisation Project Victoria: Flora, Fauna and Habitat Hectares Assessment) provides details of the flora and fauna investigation conducted as part of this referral.
