> The Project
We have invested $12.4 million in a major sewer main upgrade for Bendigo.
This investment was to create more capacity for the city's growing population.
An immediate benefit is the additional capacity in the pipeline during times of extreme high rainfall events like those experienced in late 2010 and early 2011, where water has found its way into the sewer system causing overflows and impacts on customers.
> Project Background
Sections of the current Bendigo sewer system were installed as far back as the 1920s. Other sections were constructed between 1950 and 1970.
Our ongoing capital works program includes repairs and upgrades to sewer systems. This is a major sewer main upgrade.
Stage 1 of the Bendigo Creek Sewer Duplication Project was undertaken in 2006. 3.8 km of sewer main was upgraded from Bayne Street near the Bendigo tennis courts to Maple Street in Golden Square.
Stage 2 involved upgrading the Bendigo Creek sewer from Maple Street in Golden Square to Elvey Drive in Kangaroo Flat, a distance of about 6.1 km.
Local business Leed Engineering won the construction contract.
