Back Creek Siphon Upgrade Project

> The Project

The Back Creek Siphon pipeline, located near Malmsbury, connects two sections of the Coliban Main Channel and runs under Back Creek which lies in a 37-metre deep valley.

Originally constructed in 1921, the 600-metre pipeline forms an important part of the water delivery infrastructure – transferring water from the Coliban catchment storages in Malmsbury to meet the water supply needs of customers in Castlemaine and Bendigo, via the rural Coliban Main Channel.

The original pipeline had exceeded its useful life and new methods were used to upgrade the pipeline whilst keeping the historical integrity of the pipeline intact.

The upgrade involved installing a new 1.3 metre diameter pipe inside the existing 1.5 metre diameter concrete pipeline. This was to ensure the historical significance of the original pipeline is maintained and limit excavation along the pipeline route.

> Cost and Timeline

The $2 million upgrade was awarded to Interflow Pty Ltd. The project commenced in June 2011 and was completed in September 2011.
