To work out how efficiently your site is using water it is a good idea to compare your water consumption to a measure of your businesses activity. Common measures of water efficiency include:

       -  Kilolitres per tonne/kilogram of product;

     -  Litres per item produced;

     -  Litres per dollar revenue;

     -  Kilolitres per customer/student/employee/unit per day/year;

     -  Kilolitres per bed;

     -  Kilolitres per square metres or irrigated hectare.

Knowing how efficiently you use water allows you to compare your business with other similar businesses. Information about industry benchmarks can be found through your own industry networks or through searching the internet.
